ZDT (Zhongwen Development Tool) is a simple flashcard program that you can use to learn characters.

You can use the following file to load in chapters 1-6 of our textbook. Download the file to your computer, then in ZDT choose File->Restore and select the file you downloaded. I have not yet typed in chapters 7 and 8 from the textbook but when I do I will post it here.
Chapters1-6 (You need to right-click and choose save-as).

- The upper left window has a few groups include Categories and Flashcards. You can use the Categories tab to create groups of characters to review. In the image, you can see some default categories at the top as well as one for each chapter that I have created.
- The upper right area shows you the list of characters that are in the current category. If you right click on characters, one of the options will show you an animation of how to write the character (see second image).
- The bottom pane is a dictionary that you can search by typing Chinese characters into the search area. After you find a character you can drag it to the upper right area to add it to the group.
- To play the flashcards, click the Flashcards tab, then click the green triangle (play button) to the right. Reference image 3 below. A dialog will popup to ask you which categories you want to review. Use the ctrl+click to select the chapters you want. The flashcards will randomly play through and any that you get wrong will appear again and again until you get them right. Note: When the flashcards ask for pinyin, your keyboard should just be in regular English mode. Just type the pinyin the same as the IME (with the tone number after the letter). So something like zhong1guo2ren2 would be an answer.
